FieldCraft v0.7.5 is out — an update to the open-source CAE tool written in Rust that turns geometry into finite element models, writes decks for Abaqus, Nastran and LS-DYNA, and solves linear static and modal problems with its own solver. Details are in the release description on GitHub.
The main change is that models are now stored in SI units. A file saved in version 0.7.0 or earlier opens and is converted from the declared unit system; when saving, a copy of the file being replaced is kept. Older versions of FieldCraft will not open a model saved in 0.7.5. In addition, the macOS build has a new application identifier: from io.github.jyviko.fieldcraft to io.github.tangencylabs.fieldcraft. Because of this, version 0.7.0 cannot update itself — you need to manually download the dmg once and drag the application into Applications; from 0.7.5 auto-update works again. On Linux, updating the .deb or .rpm replaces the old desktop entry and icons, so pins and favorites made with the old desktop id will have to be recreated. FieldCraft also learned to read SolidCraft projects up to version 0.30.1 (format 48).
What it means
In our reference, FieldCraft has a dedicated tool page. The tool is positioned as an open-source 3D generator under the Apache-2.0 license, written in Rust. The authors describe it as a single modeler for structures, heat and fluids: a parametric part on input, a verified result on output, with automatic hex and tet meshing, its own nonlinear implicit and explicit FEA, heat transfer and lattice Boltzmann CFD. Among the repository's tags are ai-agents and mcp: AI agents can control FieldCraft via fieldcraft-cli mcp.
The move to SI affects file compatibility: models from older versions are converted on opening, but there is no backward compatibility — 0.7.5 files will not open in earlier versions. This is worth keeping in mind when collaborating or storing projects. The change of the macOS application identifier is a one-time inconvenience for 0.7.0 users: a manual dmg install will be required. For those working with SolidCraft, the new version extends compatibility to format 48.
The update is technical in nature: it changes the internal representation of models and the installation infrastructure, without adding new export formats beyond the already declared 3MF and decks for Abaqus, Nastran and LS-DYNA.How the method works. The diagram was drawn based on this news note.
