EndoPrior-GS improves dynamic 3D reconstruction for endoscopy
Researchers presented EndoPrior-GS, a method for dynamic endoscopic reconstruction based on 3D Gaussian Splatting. The work is published on arXiv, and the project page is available at the link. The authors combine visual heuristics extracted from frames with estimated depth maps to obtain a joint texture prior. This prior guides the initialization of primitives and subsequent density control, and is also extended to the temporal domain through a texture-dependent term that dynamically weights the contribution of paired primitives during training. On the EndoNeRF and SCARED datasets, the method reduces Flow Error by 27.7% and 25.8% relative to the compared approaches, while preserving rendering quality and real-time speed.
What it means
EndoPrior-GS builds on the Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) approach from our reference. Base 3DGS is an open source 3D generator from Inria and MPII, which the authors describe as the reference implementation of "3D Gaussian Splatting for Real-Time Radiance Field Rendering." The code is distributed under the Gaussian-Splatting License: the program may be used, modified and distributed free of charge only for non-commercial research purposes, and commercial use requires the explicit consent of the licensors.
According to the fact sheet for base 3DGS, training to evaluation quality requires 24 GB of VRAM, and the optimizer runs through PyTorch and CUDA extensions in a Python environment. EndoPrior-GS targets deformable intraoperative scenes, where ordinary 3DGS produces false geometry and instability under varying illumination. The authors of the new work do not specify the VRAM requirements for their method.
For those working with 3D reconstruction in medicine, EndoPrior-GS shows that texture priors can noticeably improve deformation tracking without sacrificing rendering speed. At the same time, the licensing restrictions of base 3DGS remain relevant: the non-commercial research focus means that clinical use will require separate clearance. How the method works.
