LichtFeld-Studio adds drag-and-drop splat export and batch frame extraction

A new LichtFeld-Studio release is out — Splat Drag Export, Batch Video Extraction and Crop-Box Training. The release was published on 18.10.2026; details are in the release description on GitHub. Among the changes: dragging models from the Scene Graph into a folder or directly into Blender as PLY or SPZ, numeric fields for the crop box and ellipsoid, resuming saved trainings, batch frame extraction from video with exact FPS, and a software fallback decoder for formats the GPU can't handle.

What it means

LichtFeld-Studio is in our reference — it's an open source 3D generator under the GPL-3.0 license. The author describes it as a native application for training, inspecting, editing, automating and exporting 3D Gaussian Splatting scenes. According to the fact sheet, the tool runs on CUDA 12.8+ and is written in C++23, meaning it targets NVIDIA graphics cards. The new release expands the workflow inside the application itself. Drag-and-drop export to Blender removes the intermediate step of saving a file manually, while the numeric fields for the crop box and ellipsoid make scene cropping reproducible: values can be set precisely rather than only with the mouse. Resuming trainings, including sessions saved during sparsification, is about long runs that previously had to be started over. Batch frame extraction with exact FPS and a software fallback for formats the GPU decoder doesn't support covers part of preparing data for training: video can be split into frames right in the tool without resorting to external utilities. The fact sheet for LichtFeld-Studio lists PLY, SOG, SPZ and standalone HTML viewer as export formats — the new release adds direct transfer of PLY and SPZ to Blender on top of that. The developer does not specify whether system requirements or the CUDA version change in this release. The previous release in the repository was v0.5.3, and the code was updated in September 2026. For those already working with LichtFeld-Studio, the release closes several routine operations: moving splats into Blender, precisely setting the training region and preparing video data. For everyone else, it's a reason to look at the tool if you need a native Gaussian Splatting editor for NVIDIA without cloud services.
