OOOSplat 0.6.1: In-Scene Operations, View Recovery, and Update Checks

OOOSplat 0.6.1 is out — an update to the local app for converting video and photos into 3D Gaussian Splatting. The release adds new-version reminders, move and rotate gizmos right in the scene, selection inversion, camera angle restoration when reopening a project, and improved handling of loop captures. Details are in the release description on GitHub.

What it means

The changes concern OOOSplat — an open source 3D generator under the Apache-2.0 license. The app runs locally on Apple Silicon, Windows and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS x86_64, uses the machine's CPU and GPU, and does not require uploading materials to the cloud. Export is to PLY. In the new version the scene is closer to a familiar 3D editor: the model can be moved and rotated with gizmos, not just through numeric panels. For selecting Gaussian objects, inversion has been added via Ctrl+I or Command+I, and rectangular selection now takes the visible area into account, not just the center of a point. This simplifies cleaning up and editing splats before export. Worth noting separately is the handling of camera angle and saving. The app remembers the last camera on the current device and restores it when the project is reopened. The "Save" button has been renamed to "Save editing" and no longer creates edit.ply automatically — a separate "Export PLY" item has been added for that. The original final.ply is not overwritten. For loop videos, a frame closure check is now enabled during automatic optimization: the fast, balanced and accurate modes now look for matching frames at the start and end of the capture to reduce drift when walking around an object. The developer warns that this increases matching time and does not guarantee finding a closed loop for any material. The release continues the push toward local processing: updates are checked but installed manually, and a failed check does not affect generation or preview.
